Seeking Assistance with Community Project

Dear Community:

After nearly 10 years of research and 6 years since the first quilt in this series was completed, I have finally put all the piecestogether to finish The Lynch Quilts Project. And to do so, I ask you, the community, to help me bring this project tocompletion.

Project Overview
The Lynch Quilts Project (LQP) is a community-based effort which explores the history and ramifications of racial violence, specifically lynching, in the United States through the textile tradition of quilting. This project consists of a series of six quiltstackling the lynching phenomenon from various perspectives including collective memory, communal conflict, gender, healing and politics. The quilts combine a variety of traditional and contemporary quilting and textile techniques to examinehow the past, present and future are intricately connected.

At the core of this project, is a healing ritual, which requires the hands of the community to help reclaim and heal this history, and in the process recognize those that have fallen victim to this act of racial/ethnic terrorism and oppression. As such, theproject cannot be completed by me alone or any one person, but must be realized through the communal process.

Project History

The first quilt in the series, Her Name Was Laura Nelson, was completed in 2004 and since its debut has been exhibited ina variety of venues with diverse audiences. At each showing viewers have the opportunity to record their stories andopinions concerning issues of ethnic conflict in a project journal and contribute a piece of fabric to the quilts. To date, manystories and more than 100 lbs. of fabric donations have been collected.

Project Goals

By working with a diverse cross section of individuals and communities across the nation and internationally, my goal is toensure that the quilt tops for 4 of the remaining 5 quilts are completed by Spring/Summer 2012. And you know what? I thinkwe as a community can do it! A catalog of the entire Lynch Quilts Project is planned and will include the names and bioinformation of all participants.

What You Can Do

At present, assistance is specifically being sought for Quilts II, IV and V. Quilt III is in already in progress.Quilt VI is a unique experiment, which presently exists in a virtual format. Participation in this stage of its developmentrequires setting up displays about LQP at various community, cultural and art events. If you are interested in participating inthis community action, please let me know and I can forward additional information concerning Quilt VI. For those of younot interested in sewing, but more interested in discussing these topics in the community, this may be the portion of the LQPfor you.

I want to say “Thank You” in advance for your participation in LQP and helping to spread the word. If you would like to stayupdated on LQP as it continues to manifest please join our Facebook Page – The Lynch Quilts Project or send an email to lcrowestorm@yahoo.com to be included in the monthly newsletter about the Project. Make sure to include in the subject line of your email “LQP Newsletter.” If you would like to see additional information on the first quilt in this series completed in 2004, Her Name Was Laura Nelson, please view my website,www.TheLynchQuiltsProject.com or www.LaShawndaCroweStorm.com.

With the Utmost Sincerity,

Does anyone have thoughts they'd like to share on the relationship between oppression and creativity?  Do you think there is one?  If yes what? If not why?

I work in fabric but do what I call wall hangings.  Is it acceptible for me to join this group?
Comment by Kathleen DeQuence Anderson on May 13, 2011 at 12:44pm

Greetings quilters,

Thank you for creating this group!

Just the words 'fabric', 'cloth', 'textiles', give me goosebumps, cause my heart to flutter, bring a song to my soul!  Many of you can probably relate.  Although I have not yet put my fabric to work in a quilt, I do have a collection of leftovers from my wardrobe projects just waiting.  One day. . .

Looking forward to reading more.
