Swann Auction 2012 - Personal Thoughts

Started by Darryl Love. Last reply by ANN 'SOLE SISTER' JOHNSON on Saturday. 3 Replies

As the auction concludes today, I had a chance to look at the listings.  As usual, I saw the same names (which is kinda boring if you ask me).  There was nothing that was jaw-dropping beautiful, but a couple of lots were interesting:Lot 80 - A…Continue

Where do you find Black art?

Started by Jennifer Oladipo. Last reply by Shaunn Casselle Feb 12. 11 Replies

Hello All. I'm a fledgling collector and also starting a magazine about African and Diaspora art, but I was wondering where you all find and buy most often. Are there some "must see" galleries that always deliver? Or certain show that shouldn't be…Continue

What should collectors look for when purchasing art for personal and investment reasons?

Started by House of Art. Last reply by Turtel Onli Jan 22. 45 Replies

On a personal level first and foremost I purchase what speaks to me and I can afford.   When talking about purchasing art in the primary market as a monetary investment and looking to preserve wealth, I'm far more selective in what I'm going to pay…Continue

Can Black Collectors Afford "High" Priced Black Art?

Started by Darryl Love. Last reply by Darryl Love Jan 15. 65 Replies

Recently, I made some price inquiries of some artwork.  I was saddened to learn that most of the art was way above what I could afford right now.  For example, I LOVE Richard Mayhew's landscapes.  But I'm not at a point in my life whereby I can lay…Continue

Thanks Najee! points well noted. . . . some people have told me that they love the girl in the boat and they want to take her home maybe because she is busty. . . I have always replied "beware of the two men in the other boat they might be her dad and brother!". . . lol.

These are some cool pieces, congrats to the artists. However, I must comment on the presentation. I am disliking that salon style with the names that are almost bigger than the work. It is distracting  could the curator please get it together, give the work some proper respect and breathing room.....sheesh. peace

@Tyrone, very strong. I also would like to see it in person. Is that on a piece of found material? Love it. @Kanayo this is an exciting piece, the glazing is really nice and the way in which you handled the boat, skillful. I could have enjoyed it if it where two seperate paintings, one with the women in the boat and the other with just the two figures in the distance waters. Areas to consider; Is it me but the women is a lil busty, nothing wrong with that (what ever floats yah boat) and her left hand appears to be a little off. Other than that it's a well executed work of art.

Tyrone - that is one hell of a piece! I should be in Columbia next month and want to see that in person. Stunning.

The chart below entitled "Angels' Call" was purchased and donated to the Tubman Museum in Macon GA.  Macon was the boyhood home of Rev. Phillips in the late 19th century. His pioneering legacy as an early Pentecostal visual art maker and Pastor is finding its place.
