The Leading Voice for the Black Arts Community.
Dear Brother Najee and Sister Janelle
I would like to issue you both a challenge. Inspired by Brother Darryl’s last blog, I would like to elicit the help of the entire BAIA family in identifying some of the site’s most promising emerging artists and uniting them with BAIA collectors. I propose that BAIA establish an AA/Black art juried exhibition on site whereby seven artworks from seven participating artists would be judged by the BAIA family. A seven member advisory committee composed of master artists, art critics, academics and/or intellectuals from the site would be formed to select the participating artists. I am willing to put up a modest sum of money (say approx. $1,800.00), hopefully along with 6 other collectors which would guarantee that the artworks of the 1st place winner would be purchased and placed in art collections. $10,000.00 goes to the winner and $2,600.00 goes to the BAIA site for expenses. BAIA (perhaps with the assistance of a local gallery) would be responsible for confirming the existence/validity of the artworks while assisting and paying for the shipping of the artworks to the collectors (within the US). Once the collectors have received their artworks, the winning artist would be awarded the $10,000.00.
The seven artworks series would be judged on criteria such as the following:
1) Originality, creativeness
2) AA /Black Cultural connectivity / relevance / proof of concept
3) Consistency / continuity of the seven artworks
4) Technical skill, execution, innovation
5) Construction, materials used
The above is just a rough draft of an idea and probably not for everyone. As always, all comments and suggestions are welcomed.
Brother Najee and Sister Janelle, coming back to the challenge, I imagine some site structure, people coordination and timeframe management would be required to pull this off. However, I can’t think of two better individuals for the task. Peace!!!!

Permalink Reply by Najee Dorsey on December 26, 2011 at 9:20pm For clearification, there are 7 first place winners of which recieve a $1800 purchase award and the works goes to the collectors putting up the money, Is that correct?
Brother Najee,
No, this is a winner take all competition. My intention was to design a juried competition that could help advance the career of one emerging artist from the BAIA site. In the scenario created, the winner of the juried competition would have his or her seven artworks placed in seven different art collections in addition to receiving the $10,000.
In order to keep the juried competition from being popularity contest, each of the 7 participating collector would contribute 7 pts to their favorite artists in the competition. The artists who finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the BAIA member voting round would receive 25 pts, 15pts and 10 pts respectively. The artist with the most points at the end of the day wins. Again, this is a very rough sketch of my vision going forward.
There will also be rules which I have only partially thought about. For example:
1) All artworks would have to be originals
2) The winning artist would retain copyright ownership of the artwork, but would take a good faith pledge not to sell copies or exact replicas of the artworks purchased by the participating collectors.
This is a work in process. Again all suggestions are welcomed. Has anyone ever competed in a juried exhibition? Peace.

I participate annually in several juried exhibits and competitions. Your concept is different than most but it is still possible. I have listed below some of the standards found in juried competitions. I hope the will be of some existence to you.
Award Money on average: $1,500 to $25,000. There are other award that are given for example, Art Supply store participate with gift certificates, Organizations give awards, The host of the Competition often has a Purchase Award.
Opportunities: Major galleries and museums may host an exhibit from a percentage of the entries. Major art industry publications feature the competition and highlight it winners. Galleries that host often find new talent to represent from the competition. Some of the national competitions date back 100 years and gives an emerging artist opportunity to exhibit with established artist. Catalogs and books document some juried competitions. As you can see juried competitions are excellent resume builders.
Funding: Most competition are funded by artist participation in the form of an entry fee than may range from $25.00 to $60.00 Others are funded by private and public endowments and generally are free.
Artist entries may range from 300 to 4000 entries. If you got 600 entries with a $50.00 entry fee it give you
$10,000 Award Money, A BAIA donation, gallery hosting fee, plus the opportunity for the gallery to possibly sale the selected work, and pay the jurors for their time.
Excepted entries are generally no more than 75 to 200. Most artist, beginners to established would like the opportunity to win money and have that same painting sale in the exhibit. Some competitions have a collector's night where the opportunity to purchase the paintings is given before the awards are identified.
The Jurors are generally, Museum Curators or Historians, Gallery Owners or Directors, Established Artist, and on a few occasions Collectors.
Again this is some of the basics, you may be able to incorporate some of it into your concept.
FANTASTIC
i remember reading about museum purchase drives
no fees to enter
but the winner got a $500 prize and the musuem kept their piece
the key was all the non winning entries were offered to the museum collectors and many sold at their asking price which was way above $500
so many artists would enter the competition, hoping they would lose in order to get more money for their artwork in a sale to the museum collectors
Brother Archie,
Thank you for your comments. What kinds of conditions or stipulations were imposed on the artists in the juried exhibitions in which you participated? Did you have to sign anything? Peace!!!
Permalink Reply by Mason Archie on December 27, 2011 at 3:08pm Michael,
Signing is sometimes required when the host takes possession of your art and to establish agreed condition of the art work.
Stipulations: Entry date deadline
Artwork completed with the last 2-3 years
All artwork must be original, no reproductions of any kind.
Artwork subject matter must be original, cannot be copied from existing artwork or from copyright materials.
Size restrictions, depending on host.
Delivery methods, depending on host, generally uniform method of shipping if there is going to be a exhibit. For those delivering in person, whatever is easiest for the host.
Delivery is generally the responsibility of the artist.
The artwork is generally insured by the host while in their possession.
All work must be framed and ready to hang, if two dimensional.
The host will generally provide pedestal, and display cases for three dimensional work.
If there is an entry fee, it is paid before or at the time your image and personal information is submitted.
All juried competition excuse themselves from questions on the jurors selection.
These are a few things that come to mind.
great idea - need to see the math on paper
7*1800 from 7 collectors
where does the the $10k and the 2600 come from?
Brother Jesse,
7 x$1800.00 =$12,600= $10,000 +$2,600. Of course, there might need to be minor changes for taxes, if applicable. I just threw the numbers together. Thanks, Peace!!!
thanx for the clarification
but i am still confused
but which one of the 7 collectors get the winning artwork?
and what do the other six collectors who put up $1800 get in exchange for their cash (besides a hearty thank you)?
ok now i understand
one artist is the winner
that artist gives up 7 pieces of work for $10,000
and each of the 7 collectors who put up the $1800 each would each get a piece of artwork
and BAIA gets a working capital pool
potentially doable
an expansion
define 7 catagories of art
realism, abstract, etc
have 1 winner in each category
"spreads the wealth"
better assurance that each collector gets hat he wants/likes
also should be a binding contract that assures no other reproductions of the image are made
and collector agrees to give up art for a "major" exhibit when insurance and shipping are paid by the artist or his rep
Brother Jesse,
Good ideas, but an expansion on the level that you are suggesting might make the exhibition too difficult to pull off. Besides, five more collectors are still needed at this point ( Brother Clark B is on board), not to mention seven participants for the advisory counsel and buy-in from Najee and Janelle. However, you make an excellent point in that the participating collectors might not get the artwork they desire. But I am hoping they would be open to being surprised and stepping outside of their comfort zone. I am! Peace!!!
i am willing to help , but i know i cant step outside of my comfort zone for $1800!!
