Black Art In America

The Leading Voice for the Black Arts Community.

Dear Brother Najee and Sister Janelle

I would like to issue you both a challenge. Inspired by Brother Darryl’s last blog, I would like to elicit the help of the entire BAIA family in identifying some of the site’s most promising emerging artists and uniting them with BAIA collectors. I propose that BAIA establish an AA/Black art juried exhibition on site whereby seven artworks from seven participating artists would be judged by the BAIA family. A seven member advisory committee composed of master artists, art critics, academics and/or intellectuals from the site would be formed to select the participating artists. I am willing to put up a modest sum of money (say approx. $1,800.00), hopefully along with 6 other collectors which would guarantee that the artworks of the 1st place winner would be purchased and placed in art collections. $10,000.00 goes to the winner and $2,600.00 goes to the BAIA site for expenses. BAIA (perhaps with the assistance of a local gallery) would be responsible for confirming the existence/validity of the artworks while assisting and paying for the shipping of the artworks to the collectors (within the US). Once the collectors have received their artworks, the winning artist would be awarded the $10,000.00.

The seven artworks series would be judged on criteria such as the following:

1) Originality, creativeness

2) AA /Black Cultural connectivity / relevance / proof of concept

3) Consistency / continuity of the seven artworks

4) Technical skill, execution, innovation

5) Construction, materials used

The above is just a rough draft of an idea and probably not for everyone. As always, all comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Brother Najee and Sister Janelle, coming back to the challenge, I imagine some site structure, people coordination and timeframe management would be required to pull this off.  However, I can’t think of two better individuals for the task. Peace!!!!

I live in Miami and notice or haven't notice a large African American art scene. Im very new to the art world so I may just need some info. I would love to be apart of the art scene and competitions as such mentioned.
