The Leading Voice for the Black Arts Community.
Creating art is a world of wonder and fulfillment for me. It’s a magical feeling creating original works that originate from my imagination. I enjoy cutting and juxtaposing material for creative designs. My most recent series, “Art Persona” is a collection of very diverse women characters, developed over time. I enjoy using my hands to craft out the simple, rich characteristics in faces, bodies, cultures and fashion. I hope viewers connect on some level, with both ordinary and elaborate characters in my work. Inspiration comes to me frequently, with the multitude of colorful people in the world. Our unrepeatable personalities are intriguing; often funny. While creating, I don’t worry about particular outcomes. Feeling my way through, my subjects take shape spontaneously. The element of surprise is great fun; it keeps my work sessions exciting and always changing.
My “Art Persona” series mostly featured African-American women in the beginning. As a Black man growing up with a Single Mother and two sisters, I’m not surprised of this natural progression. I began to see endless possibilities with working with women alone. However, I’ve since began to expand my subject matters. I often collect material, like paper, fabric and other ingredients that I’m compelled to work with. Some common materials include paper, fabric, ribbon, paint and jewel embellishments. I usually start a piece with pencil sketches, freehand and traced. These sketches lay the foundation for the creative process. Adding layers of cut material makes the final piece blossom with color and rich textures. (Medium: Mixed Media on Paper). When each work is finished, the characters reveal surprising, unpredictable personalities of their own. I feel honored when people engage my work; it’s the exhilaration of one imagination touching another.
My current series developed from the skills and techniques I acquired making greeting cards, since 2005. Through experimenting, these new discoveries evolved into frame-worthy art pieces. I’m currently creating new additions for the Art Persona series, exploring new techniques to enhance the growing collection. I hope my artwork finds its way into a universal thread of art lovers and collectors throughout the world. I’m grateful for every opportunity to share my works, and welcome comments and inquiries. Thank You!
