Bio and Artist's Statement
I was born and raised in Detroit, MI, developing an interest in Art at an early age. Through family influence, I began drawing at the age of four. After admission into Detroit’s Cass Technical High School, I decided to make the pursuit of Art a lifetime goal. Later, I completed one year of study at the Columbus College of Art and Design and four years of study at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies. I received my BFA in Illustration (graduating with honors) from the College for Creative Studies in May 2006. Primarily working in Acrylics, Oils, and (sometimes collage), my current style involves the use of traditional painting techniques, iconography, and symbolism as a means of conveying a narrative to the viewer. Through use of symbols (both familiar and unfamiliar), in conjunction with the figure, I aim to educate the viewer on something new or deepen their understanding of things they may have previously encountered. Exhibitions of my work include the National Black Fine Art Show (2008 and 2009(represented by NCA Michigan) as well as “Embrace” (in conjunction with the National Black Arts Festival) in Atlanta, GA. Overall, my work is directed at achieving some means of social commentary. My goal as an Artist will always be to continue to use my work as a vehicle for enlightenment.
