Profile Information

::   LIVING ART ABSOLUTE & OUT LOUD   ::

As far as I can remember, I have been making art in one manner or another and continue to do so passionately ... I consider the Visual Arts field to be an invaluable and sacred profession .. without art where would we all be, as it is an integral part of our daily lives...

A native of Alaska, I was raised as a youth in Chicago and educated in parochial academy institutions.   From that timeline,  I have since traveled a creative and an artistic journey influenced by the kaleidoscope of cultural nuances...   In addition to my art practice, I currently work as an arts administrator, facilitator, journalist and free-lance in a number of arts disciplines throughout the Midwest.

Primarily self-taught, I work from a diverse repertoire, this lends to my being a prolific visual artist that has been a practicing creative for well over two decades.... I have great love and respect for the visual arts and receive an immeasurable amount of pleasure and satisfaction from creating artwork;  conceiving the first form(s) of what I'd like to fashion, beginning the piece, the processes, the different stages, the minutiae of each phase as it comes into being, the unexpected surprises that occur, the uglies and challenges that need to get worked out which present new opportunities to further experiment and explore ... and then the "birth" of the resulting piece of fine art comes to be in final culmination of my vision and labor.   I stay in a state of awe and am continually inspired by the whole spectral expanse of the creative experience.

My signature figurative sculptural work is organic, extremely detailed and textural, resulting in ethereal pieces evocative of ancient entities with some of the techniques relating to ethnic craft archetypical of ancient West Africa...  I am also known for my compelling signature, 2-Dimensional narrative paintings which primarily address my lineal connection to and illuminate the importance of African American, Caribbean Latina/o,  Afro-Caribbean,  and Afro-Latin Women in the context of the African-Diasporic culture and the divine feminine/Women's art of the Diaspora.   I often incorporate symbolism and reflections of African, American, African-American, Native Alaskan and Taino cultures.

I create large Decorative~Functional "FrameMirror Work" artpieces (my own concept and design) inclusive of handwrought, incised, highly charged, worked and reworked (chased and repousse`d) surfaces, deeply variant, tactile compositions of metalwork and often hand-tooled leather, as well as welded works, encaustic pieces, wall relief's, sculptural paintings, original castwork, printmaking, fetishes, totems, collage, carvings, assemblage and constructions, functional-utilitarian objets d'art, installations, public art works, claywork, cement works, mixed-media, illustration, photographic works, textural abstract compositional works and textiles & fiber.

In fashioning my work, I utilize a wide spectrum of media and materials ("Steel to Stone/Paint to Paper"), integrating vibrant hues, organic patinas, complex surfaces and incised reliefs, handwrought treatments and emphasized textures.  I have also brought facets of my complex textural work to my exclusive artisan "Statement" design jewelry line (begun in 2010) which feature handwrought precious and semi-precious metals, semi-precious stones and mixed-media..that speak in bold character and substantial elements, capturing the spirit of the contemporary woman seeking pieces of distinction in wearable artistry.

It's On Sis',  the twenty-ninth year of MEET THE ARTISTS' featuring extraordinary work by an extraordinary group of local artists.  The work is poppin', great paintings and mixed-media, interesting authors.  The metal 3-D sculpture is all "Stop Dead In Your Tracks", the social statement installation piece is "FOR REAL, no BS", the LIFE-LIKE dolls are the best that we have ever seen.

The INDYPL African American History Committee is truly proud to present this showcase.   I Thank everyone for being a part of this show.

Sis'  As Always, we are in awe of the exhibition at the library, so many pieces, so much variety, such a excellent display.   Nearly 6 dozen brand new pieces grace the walls, over 4 dozen artists participating.   The Awards Ceremony was a great event, we all had a good time that evening.   Congrats to the winners.

Accolades, Congratulations and Kudos' on your constant efforts to bring visual art to the community in an all inclusive venue.

Looking on the 2017 INDYPL presentation of Meet The Artists coming up soon in February.

A very belated 'thank you' D ... it seems I didn't reply to your kind comments.  The exhibition ran til 4 June 2016 and I ran a Family workshop that day for parents and kids to make a small clay Equiano sculpture and learn about Equiano's life.  Their sculptures are now in my studio for firing and then they will be able to take it home with them.  Discussing slavery with young children is sensitive and I hope they will take the memory with them that this great man was instrumental in ending slavery in Britain.

I have taken the plunge and this sculpture is now being cast, a decade after making, into a limited edition of 9 in bronze.  I would like to get one into the White House for his memory and achievements as Britain's first black political leader.  Do you have any advice how I could do this?

I love also seeing your wonderful works! and appreciate our connection from London!!  Best wishes to your creativity!

Artist JAMES DUPREE, battled the City of Philadelphia for nearly two years to save his studio from a government effort to seize his "Mantua Art Studio" in a politically orchestrated land grab.

On December 14th, 2014 the city of Philadelphia reneged on its mission to take the Artists' land and it was decreed that Dupree could keep his property.

We applaud our Brother for standing his ground, not giving up and taking the battle all the way to the end.
