The Contemporary Realist

I am a self taught artist, the son of Arkansas sharecroppers. MY parents came to Chicago to better themselves when I was six and I started drawing. My work has been selling since the age of eleven, at fifteen I was teaching art out of my parents apartment. By the age of seventeen Mrs. Rose Kennedy, the mother of the president, Senator Edward M. Kennedy and the Sears Foundation were among the owners of a Sanders original.

I won awards in high school and was the subject of many newspaper accounts and articles, including in 1967 a three page spread in the Chicago Sun Times, Midwest magazine, titled "portrait Of A Young Man, As A Serious Artist".

After High School and various freelance jobs in  art, I was drafted into the  United States Army where I eventually became a Arts and Crafts instructor in the Special Services at Ft. Hauchuca, Arizona. There I taught drawing and painting and learned how to teach photography, ceramics and candle making. It was while teaching in the Army that I further developed the technique I had started as a teenager. It is this Technique that has become such a phenomenal success.

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard, "I know I can't draw, I can't even draw a straight line", I would be a rich man. The truth is they really mean to say, I don't know how to draw. The ability to draw and be creative is within all of us. It's my belief that everyone can be an artist. I tell my students that there isn't anything  I can't do, only things I don't know how to do. We all have within us the ability to do anything and everything. It's up to each of us to determine to what degree we wish to develop these abilities. Once they realize this, it's up to me to show each person that they are an artist.  I only have to open their eyes to a new way of seeing things. It changes everyone's life. It's always stimulating to see how eager they are, from young teens to adults, and then watch their development from session to session, painting to painting.

My students are of all ages and come from every walk of life, from retired business executives seeking new interests, young mothers and housewives looking for relaxation from their daily routine or an outlet for their creative energies. Whether it's beginners with no former training or working professionals artists and teachers seeking a new approach or the development of new techniques.

AALBC books worth reading...

The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson. This was an amazing, magnificent book chronicling the history of great numbers of Blacks who began leaving the south to seek a better life in the big cities of the North during the time period between 1915 through 1970.
