Margaret Penn Profile

I started collecting paintings in 1969, when I made my first trip to Haiti. I was in awe of the brilliant colors, the skill of the Haitian artists and their willingness to explain their work. The artists' discussions helped me begin to understand the history of Haiti. I met Nehemy, one of the top Haitian artists living and working in Haiti. He was owner and teacher of L'Atelier, Institut at de Dessin at de Peinture, GALERIE NEHEMY.

Over the next 15 years I returned to Haiti yearly and sent hours with Nehemy at his gallery, discussing Haitian art and purchasing works,.

A few years after I began collecting Haitian art I began attending CRT Craftery Gallery exhibitions. Janathan Bruce, founding director of the Craftery Gallery gave me unlimited time to discuss buying and collecting African American Art. At the same time, I began to attend lectures and workshops on buying and collecting African American Art whenever they were available in the Greater Hartford Ares.

My relationship with Jonathan Bruce developed extensively. He was influential assisting Edjohnetta Miller and me in organizing and implementing the very successful African American Holiday Craft Market. The Craft Market for over 15 years at the CRT Craftery Gallery

Some of my major piece of work were purchased through the CRT Craftery Gallery. However, many other pieces were purchased directly from the artists.

Today, I continue to purchase the works of African American Artists. However, I am more focused on local artists, such as Donald Boudreaux of Stanwyck Cromwell.

Many pieces are currently available to purchase.
