Profile Information

Filmmaker and visual artist Richard Reeves is the designer and director of films ranging from the abstract to mainstream drama to documentary.  Many of his short and experimental films, including Game Face, It’s a Jingle Out There and Red/Yellow/Green/Signs of Our Times, were first presented with his Detroit-based media/performance art coalition MPathic.AV in galleries and clubs throughout southeast Michigan.  Red was featured at the 2004 EksperimEnto Film and Video Festival in Manila, Philippines.

2007 saw the theatrical debut of his first feature,

Perception: The Letter.  He also trains and directs youth in all aspects of film production.

Richard has developed a unique graphic style and today creates picture almost exclusively in water-base pastels on board.   His subjects include people, animals, still life and other objects.  His blues music painting “The Hurtin’ Part” was selected for the 2008 Small Paintings National Competition by the Great Lakes Pastel Society and exhibited at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Richard also won Best in Show and placed 3rd in Oakwood’s Employee/Family Art exhibition. His portraits hang in many private collections.

Richard’s work, “Glimpses and Gestures,” was shown during the ArtPrize 2010 Competition in Grand Rapids.  It combined nine recent pastels – “Four Eyes,” which explore the window of the human soul as well as his longtime fascination with eyes and images of the eye, and five “Hand Signs,” evoking the language of human gesture – into a subtle and intimate story that may be interpreted differently by each viewer.

Hi Richard, thanks for the friend request which I accept gladly. It's always good to connect with another pastel artist. There doesn't seem to be that many of us around though I've never understood why. I believe  it's our medium that's most understood, but it's perfect for an impatient person like me who hates setting up,color mixing and cleaning up. Washing my hands is easy. I like your work, particularly the excitement and liveliness you achieve in your backgrounds. Is working with water based pastels any different from regular ones? I've never tried them.
