My signature figurative sculptural work is organic, extremely detailed and textural, resulting in ethereal pieces evocative of ancient entities with some of the techniques relating to ethnic craft archetypical of ancient West Africa... I am also known for creating compelling signature, 2-Dimensional narrative paintings which primarily address my lineal connection to and illuminate the importance of African American, AFRO-Latina/o Women in the context of the African-Diasporic culture and the divine feminine/Women's art of the Diaspora.
This work is reflective investigation/interpretation of the feminine as a physical/spiritual entity that possesses the potential to be relevant, powerful, nurturing..limitless...while proudly baring the physical and emotional detritus from life's survival and ties to the past...Womankind transcending/exceeding a physical being through the exploration of philosophical, psychological consciousness. I employ identity, women's issues, colorism, stereotypical assumptions, emotion, indigenous wisdom's-folklore, ritual, myth, magic, ceremony, ancestral memory and nature..the sensual, spiritual and the sacred manifest as material in the construct of my works as well as traditional and original personal symbolism, aesthetic references and reflective imagery pervasive of African, American, Native Alaskan and Taino cultures.
I create welded works, encaustic pieces, relief's, sculptural paintings, 3-dimensional abstractive work, original castwork, printmaking, fetishes, totems, collage, carvings, assemblage and constructions, functional-utilitarian objets d'art, installations, public art works, claywork, metalwork, cement work, paper, mixed-media, illustration, photographic works and documentation, textural abstract compositional pieces, art quilts, textiles & fiber.
On commission I create large Decorative~Functional "FrameMirror Work" artpieces (my own concept and design) inclusive of handwrought, incised, highly charged, worked and reworked (chased and repousse`d) surfaces, deeply variant, tactile compositions of metalwork and often hand-tooled leather.
In fashioning this work, I utilize a wide spectrum of media and materials ("Steel to Stone/Paint to Paper"), integrating vibrant hues, organic patinas, complex surfaces and incised reliefs, handwrought treatments and emphasized textures.
I have also brought facets of my complex textural metalwork to my exclusive artisan "Statement" design jewelry line (begun in 2010) which feature handwrought precious and semi-precious metals, semi-precious stones and mixed-media..that speak in bold character and substantial elements, capturing the spirit of the contemporary woman seeking pieces of distinction in wearable artistry.
My award-winning work has been exhibited internationally in Canada and the Caribbean, and I have participated in national group and solo exhibitions. Select pieces of my work are held in both private and corporate collections.
