Reflections

"LOVE this; powerful, and an amazing story on canvas. Reminds me of DRC pop art/political commentary circa Lumumba. Well done, reflecting Naija people.  "

My new art technique

Artist Statement:
What is hidden – color and forms – beneath the surface of my painting is where the fun of my creation begins. I use free-hand resist technique to reveal what lies beneath and use relief texture for dramatic interest. With an abundance of bold and contrasting colors in my palette, I create equal impact with both the layers above and the revealed contours below.

Biography:

Before immigrating to Canada in 1997, Yisa Akinbolaji was recognized as a leading Nigerian artist with his work and biography included in Nigerian Artists: A Who's Who and Bibliography (1993) compiled and edited by Bernice Kelly and Janet L. He was elected to the membership of Manitoba Society of Artists in 2000, becoming its President in 2001 at the 100th Anniversary and serving until 2003. On October 12, 2010, Yisa was appointed to the board of Manitoba Arts Council by the Manitoba’s Minister of Culture, Heritage and Tourism.

Hey Brother Yisa,
It is so great to hear your voice! All is well in Hampton, the year is drawing to a close and I am anxiously awaiting the Christmas break to spend time with family and friends. The year has been very fruitful in terms of I was elected the Teacher of the Year for the city of Hampton, I have had several shows in the states, I have conducted a number of workshops, created a few commissions, and accepted a new job to teach at Montgomery College in Germantown, Maryland. We will be moving to Maryland in the next few weeks and I will start my new position at the end of January. I am excited about the move and transition to the college level. I have several art series in the works and I plan to introduce a few new bodies of work by next summer. I hope that we get an opportunity to show together again, perhaps we could create an Invisible Dignity II, or come up with some other concept to collaborate on. I pray that you and the family are well and it is nice to connect with you again.

Peace,
S. Prince
